Natural-born talent only goes so far - great athletes are forged through a life of dedication and ambition. But no one gets there alone. Friends and family play as important a role as the struggles which must be overcome.
Trace Carl's past to read about the people who helped him, experiences that shaped him and hard work that saw him realize his dreams.
Soccer is in Carl's blood. Growing up as the son of the best footballer in his home-town area, Carl watched his father play, traveled with him and quickly grew to love the sport. Before long, he was playing in the most competitive Mid Wales youth teams, including Rhayder U11 and U13.
Even at a young age, Carl showed potential for controlling the match from midfield. Voters declared him Player of the Tournament after playing for the Celts team in an Under-13 Ian Rush Football Tournament at Aberystwyth. That was just a hint of what was to come.
Following in his father's footsteps, Carl attended trials at some of the UK's top clubs. At age 12, he tried out with his favourite club Manchester United and grabbed a photo with fellow Welshman Mark Hughes. Years later, the two would reunite with Hughes managing the Wales National Football Team.
After another trial with Aston Villa, Carl signed with Wolves at the age of 15. He made his professional debut in style in 1996, being named Man of the Match. Hundreds of matches and 8 clubs later, Carl travelled across the pond to join Toronto FC and begin a new stage in his life.
Between his first appearance for Wolves and his move to Canada, Carl tied the knot with his wife Laura on June 18th, 2004. He still marks the day they met as one of the most important in his life. The couple welcomed their first child, Lowri Isabella, on March 30, 2002 and their second, Milo Carter, on March 1, 2008.
TFC proved a perfect fit for Carl. He was brought up to play always with a winning mentality, and that's exactly the kind of rabid passion he found in Toronto's supporters.
Off the pitch, Carl continues to pursue his passion for fashion and different styles. He likes to stand out from the crowd, and his sharp personal style is as deadly as his on-field play.
